Michael Marra was one of Scotland's most prolific songwriters, and a much loved & respected figure in the entertainment business. He died in October 2012 and is sadly missed by his family, many musical collaborators and friends. Michael's family paid tribute to him in a statement saying " We are devastated by our sudden loss but are comforted by the kind words of so many people who loved Michael, his music and his spirit. His life's work has told our family story and the story of his beloved Dundee. Michael's songs are his legacy, given to Scotland by one wee boy from Lochee" Michael was keen to bring the El Sistema Orchestra Project for disadvantaged children to Dundee. His family have established a Trust Fund called "Optimistic Sound - A Michael Marra Memorial Music Trust for the Young People of Dundee" with Blackadders. Solicitors in Dundee to help facilitate this project. More information on Optimistic Sound can be found on their website. You can also keep up to date with news of events, releases and anything else which preserves and celebrates Michael's legacy on an official Facebook page managed by the Marra family.

10th Michael Marra Music Month is now online! The 10th Music Month will run from Christmas Breakfast until Burns Supper, during which Michael Marra's website will be streaming approximately 425 tracks of Michael's songs archive. Many of the tracks were uploaded to the site way back in 2002 - a time when most folk were still having to access the web using a very s-l-o-w dial-up connection and broadband was still in it's infancy. Some of the lofi tracks are not exactly great quality listening - Michael and I thought it was a bit like listening to music on a pocket tranny radio back in the 1960s, rough but enjoyable just the same. This year, I've given Michael's website a lick of paint and a new style - the old style had been in use for 5 years or so and I thought it time for a site facelift.I hope you all enjoy this year's musical treat, and find your favorite versions of Michael's marvelous songs!Mick McC

Alice Marra performing at All Will Be Well - Pauline Keightley Photography Reviews of the sellout All Will Be Well Tribute Concert having been appearing in the national and local press and social media. Pauline Keightley's review and wonderful photographs of the concert can be found at her website Alan Wilson's rare review in The Courier - " We were proud to know him, proud to have shared his music and finally, proud to have been there" STV's Jennie Macfie - "Alice Marra singing "Monkey Hair" is a standout moment and there are few tears unshed; any resisted being overcome by Liz Lochhead's valedictory poem. "As if they were ospreys and Angus was Africa...". Thousands of voices were raised in "All Will Be Well"- and it will. In The Scotsman's Brian Ferguson reported "Noakes told the audience that although Marra was renowned for celebrating ordinary characters, he was an "extraordinary man" himself." Rob Adams wrote in his blog - "The songs were the stars in this celebration of the Bard of Lochee; the songs and his children, and that's as it should be for someone whose art - visual, spoken, written and sung - and family were his life." On the BBC Celtic Connections website Richard Bull commented "This evening brilliantly demonstrated that Michael's uniquely creative and generous work will live on and on." The Daily Record's Joan McAlpine wrote in her column "But so many of his songs were anthems. Here Comes The Weak sung last week by Eddi Reader, would be an ideal theme for the human race. It praises the efforts of workers to overcome mighty barriers through organisation and education." Donald Cowey in the Sunday Herald summed it up nicely "If it's still hard to accept that the opportunity to see Michael perform again will not come round again, then this was the next best thing." The Mackenzie Sisters at All Will Be Well - Photograph courtesy of Pauline Keightley Just for the record the singers and musicians who appeared at the concert were - Tom Mitchell Rab Noakes Eddi Reader Dougie Maclean Pat and Gregory Kane John Spillane Mackenzie - Fiona, Eilidh and Gillian Sylvia Rae Tracey Jimmie Macgregor Rod Paterson Riley Briggs Kris Drever Liz Lochhead - Scots Makar (The National Poet of Scotland) The Hazey Janes - Andrew Mitchell, Alice Marra, Matthew Marra, Liam Brennan The House Band were - Christopher Marra Guitars and Steel Guitar Gregor Philp - Guitars Kevin Murray - Guitars and Mandolin Hilary Brooks - Piano and Accordion Steve Kettley - Tenor and Soprano Saxophone Duncan Chisholm - fiddle Christine Hanson - Cello Kevin McGuire - Upright Bass Dave Haswell - Percussion
