It was Scotland England at Wembley
May of ‘75
I badly wanted to go
But I couldn’t drive
I couldn’t afford the bus or train
I wasn’t exactly rich
Couldn’t get a lift in a car
So I decided to hitch
I stuck my thumb up outside St Andrews
Got a lift to Cupar
Stuck there for an hour
Wasn’t going so super
Eventually picked up and dropped
Outside Glasgow
Then a lift to Carlisle
Much better now
Chorus
I’d decided to go to London
on a wing and a prayer
I had no real plan how to get there
I was hoping for divine intervention
And a lot of luck, I forgot to mention
Verse
3 hours later
I’m still outside Carlisle
Into a passing service bus
I hopped on with a smile
In Carlisle town centre
I spoke to some Scotland fans
They offered me a lift
In the back of their transit van
Chorus
I’d decided to go to to London
on a wing and a prayer
I had no real plan how to get there
I was hoping for divine intervention
And a lot of luck, I forgot to mention
Verse
I reluctantly refused the lift
The van it was real shoddy
It was a mass of empty cans
And drunken bodies
I booked into a cheap B and B
Shared a room with
a lorry driver for 50p
In the morning it was torrential rain
So I bit the bullet and took the train
I arrived in Kings Cross station at twelve
Stood in a long taxi queue by myself
Chorus
I’d decided to go to London
on a wing and a prayer
I had no real plan how to get there
I was hoping for divine intervention
And a lot of luck, I forgot to mention
Verse
Shared a cab to Wembley
with fellow Scotland fans
They had a spare match ticket
Man, Oh man
Got to the game
right behind the Scotland goal
Withing ten minutes
the Scottish keeper lost control
After a five one drubbing
Got the tube
to my aunt and uncle’s
They helped me big time
out of the fankle
Put me up for the night
Gave me some cash
The next day back to Fife
By train I dashed
Chorus
I’d decided to go to London
on a wing and a prayer
I had no real plan how to get there
I was hoping for divine intervention
And a lot of luck, I forgot to mention
